David Wheeler provides insights on navigating the Internet-of-Things (IoT)

On October 26, 2015, David A. Wheeler provided insights on the webcast, “Navigating the Internet-of-Things (IoT) Implications,” hosted by The Knowledge Group, LLC. David, along with a panel of key thought leaders and professionals, reviewed and discussed the implications of the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) much anticipated and recently released report, “Internet of Things: Privacy & Security in a Connected World” as well as discussed the FTC suggestions and warnings in light of current developments in IoT and suggest ways to avoid future litigation.

The IoT is the collection of devices or sensors that connect, enable communication, or transmit information through the Internet. The FTC report acknowledges that IoT provides many benefits; however, the IoT opens a wide variety of potential security risks for corporations and consumers. The FTC also stresses the importance of enacting strong, flexible, and technologically un-biased legislation to augment the Commission’s data security enforcement.

Key topics discussed in the webcast included:

  • Internet of Things (IoT) – A Legal Primer
  • Benefits and Risks of IoT
  • Potential Security Vulnerabilities
  • Data Minimization in the Internet of Things
  • Data Minimization Requirements
  • Regulatory Developments
